Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday finally accepted the resignation from Retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa as he announced stepping down as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting.
Gen Bajwa had submitted his resignation to the PM a month ago in light of the allegations of corruption against his family’s accumulation of wealth but PM Imran Khan had refused to accept his resignation. “I requested the honourable prime minister to relinquish me from the additional portfolio of SAPM on Info & broadcasting. He very kindly approved my request,” he said in a tweet.

According to the allegations made against Bajwa and his family by journalist Ahmed Noorani, Bajwa had used his offices in setting up off-shore businesses of his wife, sons and brothers. However, Bajwa claimed that he owned evidence of the money trail and was ready to present it when needed. Despite the allegations, he will continue to work as chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority. Meanwhile, the opposition alliance, The Pakistan Democratic Movement demanded that the accusations against him must be investigated.
PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz said that Asim Saleem Bajwa must be probed and put under investigation as was done with former PM Nawaz Sharif. “If you have been appointed to a government post on taxpayers’ money and allegations are made against you and evidence is presented, you should face them,” she said.
Resignation from the post of SAPM means nothing. Not only that you must tender your resignation from the chairmanship of CPEC Authority but surrender to law as did the 3 times elected PM & his daughter despite politically motivated cases against them. https://t.co/XmHcRVhJqH
